Media release: NSCSW launches new Code of Ethics to advance reconciliation, reparations & public safety

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KJIPUKTUK (HALIFAX, NS) – The Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) has officially launched its new 2026 Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, a foundational document designed to advance reconciliation, reparations, uphold justice, and ensure the safe and ethical delivery of social work services across the province.

The new Code is the result of extensive collaboration and dialogue with social workers and community partners, including Indigenous and African Nova Scotian leaders, aimed at decolonizing social work practice and rebuilding trust. It establishes clear standards to guide social workers and ensure accountability to the public’s interest.

“This new Code of Ethics represents the College’s continuing commitment to evolve,” said Robert Wright, President of the NSCSW. “It is a promise to the public that we are holding ourselves accountable for our profession’s history and are dedicated to embedding the principles of truth and reconciliation into the very core of our practice. This is about ensuring every Nova Scotian receives ethical, just, and culturally responsive care.”

To support the transition, the NSCSW will be hosting a provincial roadshow throughout October and November. These sessions will provide an opportunity for social workers and collaborators to learn about the new standards and prepare for their implementation.

“The launch of the 2026 Code is a vital step in our ongoing journey of transformation,” stated Alec Stratford, NSCSW Executive Director/Registrar. “Our upcoming roadshow is an open invitation to engage with us as we operationalize these new standards. It is through dialogue and shared understanding that we can ensure this Code becomes a living document that truly protects the public and guides our profession toward a more just future.”

The 2026 Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice will take full effect on February 1, 2026, coinciding with the completion of the annual member renewal period.
