Embracing Safe(R) Social Work: NSCSW’s Commitment to Quality Assurance

To enhance the professional standards of social work, the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) has adopted the Nova Scotia Regulated Health Professions Network’s Standards for Good Regulation as its measure of performance (see pages 26-31 in our recent strategic plan review). Among these standards, Standard Ten stands out, articulating that the regulator encourages quality of practice through continuing competence requirements to support registrants in meeting standards of practice.

In 2023, the College conducted its first quality assurance check on 2022 professional development entries, marking a milestone in its ongoing commitment to safe(r) practice. Quality assurance in regulation serves as a cornerstone in maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of professional standards and competencies. It is an essential mechanism that ensures the consistent delivery of high-quality services, which is particularly crucial in fields like social work where the wellbeing of individuals and communities is at stake.

Quality assurance goes beyond mere compliance with established standards. It seeks to foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging professionals to constantly enhance their skills and knowledge. This is achieved through various means such as regular assessments, evaluations, and feedback mechanisms.

Promoting Public Trust and Confidence

When professionals adhere to recognized standards and continually strive for excellence, it reassures the public about the quality and reliability of the services they receive.
